Bottlenose Dolphin { BACK TO SEA FRIENDZ }

Bottlenose Dolphin’s are the gray-white porpoises you see in movies like Flipper. They have a specialized blowhole that takes in air when these aquatic acrobats jump up to 20ft in the air. Dolphins are family-oriented and will live in pods of up to twelve, communicating with their own language of underwater clicks and whistles called echolocation.

  • Dolphins are mammals just like us! They are warm blooded, breathe air, and nurse their babies with milk. Female dolphins are called cows, males are called bulls and their young are called calves
  • Dolphins use a blowhole on top of their heads to breathe and can hold their breath up to 15 minutes at a time
  • Dolphins are carnivores (meat eaters) and their favorite food is fish and squid. They have alot of teeth but do not chew their food. They use their teeth to catch and then they swallow it whole.
  • Bottlenose dolphins can be seen living with groups of dolphins known as pod
  • They prefer warmer waters and tropical climates
